11:30 - New Beginnings at Suzuki
As the rain continues to confine everyone to quarters within the garages at Daytona, we took advantage of the opportunity to see new machines and talk about the upcoming 2003 race season.
Chris Weidel, Crew Chief at Yoshimura Suzuki, graciously showed us around Aaron Yates’ new 2003 Suzuki GSX-R1000. “This Dunlop Daytona testing session will be the first time we try out the new 2003 race bike. We did some engine testing a while back using a 1000 engine in the 750 chassis, but this will be the first time we run the new chassis and new engine together. We’re anxious to start; it’s exciting to begin development of a new bike and have lots of room for growth. We’re especially ready to start answering questions here at Daytona with the new tire situation, having 1000cc four-cylinder Superbikes on slicks. With a new bike and new personnel, we’ll all be learning together. I’m sure it will be mentally stimulating.”
Speaking of new personnel, proud father Aaron Yates was introducing his four-month-old daughter Skyla to the garage scene, and she was taking it all in with wide-eyed wonder. She didn’t seem to mind the noise and commotion as dad chatted things up with Kevin Schwantz and Chris.
