16:00 - Dunlop Daytona Tire Test Extended to Thursday
As Tuesday afternoon wore on, it became apparent the wet weather would prevent everyone from logging any track time at the Dunlop Daytona Tire Test. We caught up with Les Washbon, Dunlop Motorsports Technician and Jim Allen’s right-hand man, to discuss the full implications.
“We’ve been in ongoing discussions with all the teams since Monday,” Washbon said. “As the wet weather continued, we’ve drawn up contingency plans to help alleviate the time crunch we all know is coming. The good news is we’ve been able to extend our tire test through Thursday afternoon, which will give us all more time.
“However, even with this extra day, we’ll only have about half the time we would usually have available during a normal three-day test. That means the teams won’t really have much time to sort out new bikes; they will have to jump into tire testing right away and make that the focus of what they’re doing. Also, we’ll have to allot less testing time for each tire than we had originally planned; it will be an accelerated schedule for everyone.
“We brought about 1200 tires for testing, including about seven or eight new development slicks. Some of these tires feature new construction, some use new compounds, some have both new construction and new compounds. We’ll test them for function and we’ll still need to do some extended durability runs as well.”
Wednesday and Thursday will certainly be very busy days, so join us online for a flurry of action here at the Dunlop Daytona Tire Test.
